Foursquare on Windows Phone 7
Microsoft has a long way to go before it matches Apple's 150,000 iPhone apps, but the Redmond company this morning released an early list of companies and developers working on apps for its upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series devices. The company also released details of the software development platform and the core features that developers will be able to access when they make Windows Phone 7 applications.
The news is coming out of Microsoft's Mix conference in Las Vegas. A live stream is available here. Some of the more notable names on the list of initial Windows Phone 7 Series application developers are Foursquare, Pandora, Sling Media, EA, Seesmic, PopCap, and Namco.
On stage at Mix, the company showed a Netflix application that will let people use Windows Phone 7 Series devices to watch streaming content from the movie service's online library.
No big surprise here, but Microsoft Game Studios also will be making titles for Windows Phone 7 Series, as part of the planned integration of the company's Xbox Live online gaming system onto the phone. During the keynote address this morning, Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore demonstrated a 3D game on Windows Phone 7 Series that allowed the gamer to boost his Xbox Live achievements by playing on the phone.
Here's the full list of app developers released by the company this morning:
The Associated Press, Archetype International Inc., AWS Convergence Technologies – WeatherBug, Citrix Systems Inc., Clarity Consulting Inc., Cypress Consulting, EA Mobile, Fandango Inc., Foursquare Labs Inc., frog design inc., Glu Mobile Inc., Graphic.ly, Hudson Entertainment Inc., IdentityMine Inc., IMDb.com Inc., Larva Labs, Match.com LLC, Matchbox Mobile Ltd., Microsoft Game Studios, Namco Networks America Inc., Oberon Media Inc., Pageonce Inc., Pandora Media Inc., Photobucket Inc., PopCap Games Inc., Seesmic, Shazam Entertainment Ltd., Sling Media, SPB Software Inc., stimulant, TeleCommunications Systems Inc., Touchality LLC and Vertigo Software Inc.
Images of some of those apps are available in this Microsoft gallery.
Microsoft said developers will be able to use its Silverlight, XNA Framework, Visual Studio 2010 Express and Expression Blend technologies to make apps. It's offering developers the tools as a free download.
The basic Windows Phone 7 platform features announced by the company include an accelerometer, a push notification service, hardware-accelerated video, multitouch screen, camera and microphone.
Update: The preview of the Foursquare app for Windows Phone 7 Series showed a new category called "Societies," suggesting that it will adopt something similar to the approach used by Whrrl, a competing mobile application from Seattle-based Pelago. Whrrl uses its "societies" to help people with similar interests and in similar locations connect.
The Foursquare teaser is visible in the accompanying screenshot from the Microsoft webcast. Anand Iyer of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 team pointed it out out Twitter, adding, "Stay Tuned."
