John Stanton
John Stanton, the wireless pioneer who now runs the Seattle area venture capital firm Trilogy Partners, sees an opportunity to do something bold in impoverished Haiti. The co-founder of VoiceStream Wireless and Western Wireless wants the earthquake-ravaged country to give up on the idea of building a traditional landline phone network and invest entirely in wireless.
Of course, Stanton has an interest in seeing Haiti become the first all-wireless country. His company, Trilogy International Partners, owns the second largest wireless company in the country. Stanton also is a board member at Clearwire, whose WiMax network could be a natural fit for a place like Haiti. But the Bellevue native's interest goes beyond the business world, with the wireless entrepreneur saying in remarks at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas today that Haiti has become a passion. And, in his view, there's an opportunity for wireless infrastructure to form the "foundation for a new economy."
"We see Haiti as a model for information and communications services in the 21st century. Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, can be the first ‘copper free’ country in the world," said Stanton in prepared remarks. "Haiti can have a first class telecom infrastructure without landline service – based completely on wireless technology. Our vision in re-building Haiti is to ‘leapfrog’ older technologies and create the basic platform – a wireless platform -- which will stimulate commerce at an accelerated pace and help stabilize a devastated country."
Stanton, who previously co-founded VoiceStream Wireless and Western Wireless, first invested in Haiti's wireless network in 1997. Now, the wireless company Voila employs 571 people with another 15,000 people indirectly employed in the country.
More on Stanton's plan from The Washington Post, with the wireless exec saying that Voila would invest up to $100 million in the country if more spectrum became available. However, the Post notes that the wireless network might be a good short-term strategy, but might not fly down the road since bandwidth-heavy tasks might not work well on an all-wireless network.
