Some people create mobile applications to manage finances, locate homes or connect with friends. Seattle entrepreneur Jim Bricker just wants to make sure you get that piping hot pizza to your doorstep on time.
We first wrote about Bricker's intriguing iPhone app, Order Pizza, after it launched late last year. At the time, we questioned why anyone would decide to order a pizza through an iPhone app as opposed to simply making a phone call.
But Bricker tells us that things are chugging along quite nicely, noting in a follow-up that more than 50,000 people have downloaded the app since its debut last December. It also has consistently ranked in the top 100 apps in the lifestyle category in Apple's App store.
[Correction: The number or pizza orders processed with the Order Pizza app has been changed in the headline and story to 10,000. An incorrect number was initially provided to TechFlash].
To date, he says the company has processed about 10,000 pizza orders across the country. And he noted that the company has already sent pizza orders to one in eight Pizza Hut's in the U.S., a solid achievement given that the pizza chain has its own popular iPhone app.
As we noted last December, Order Pizza serves as an intermediary between the pizza buyer and pizza seller. The app -- using Twilio's powerful technology -- allows users to send an auto-generated phone call to a pre-selected pizzeria and then wait in the comfort of their home for the pizza to arrive at their doorstep.
It doesn't always work as some Order Pizza customers have noted in the reviews in the App Store where the average rating is just two and half stars. (Some have complained about the lack of toppings offered, and pizzas that never arrived).
Even though Bricker said that spring is a slow time in the pizza business, he's still got big things baking. The company, which operates under the Order Mapper name, recently raised a modest amount of angel financing and released its new iPad app.
The company has been partnering with a number of pizza shops to help them build their own iPhone apps on the back of the Order Pizza platform. Those include Round Table, Amante, Topolina, Pizza Man and Rudino's, with more deals in the works.
Bricker also said that "a major marketing campaign and an exciting new version of Order Pizza" will be release this summer or fall. You can get a sense of how the startup is pitching itself in this YouTube video.
