Ali and Hadi Partovi, the twin brothers who sold Seattle-based iLike to MySpace just nine months ago, are leaving the social networking company, according to a report by Kara Swisher at All Things Digital. Swisher had previously reported on the future of the Partovi brothers at MySpace, speculation which heated up after MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta resigned just two months ago.
Van Natta was instrumental in the purchase of the Seattle online music site iLike, bringing on the Partovi brothers as key executives as part of the acquisition. Last October, Ali and Hadi Partovi were promoted within MySpace. Ali was named vice president of business development, while Hadi was tapped as senior vice president of technology. At the time of the announcement, MySpace employed about 70 people in Seattle. But MySpace has endured plenty of turmoil in the past year, including its fair share of executive departures.
We have a call into MySpace to confirm the news, and to find out what might happen to the Seattle office now that two of the senior leaders are leaving. We'll update this post as we find out more.
Meanwhile, Swisher has obtained internal memos from Hadi Partovi and MySpace co-president Michael Jones about the departures.
The Partovis are very well known and accomplished entrepreneurs. Hadi Partovi is the former general manager of MSN.com, a role he took on after Microsoft acquired Tellme Networks for about $800 million. Ali Partovi, who is based in San Francisco, was part of the founding team which sold LinkExchange to Microsoft for $265 million. He had served as CEO of iLike from 2002 until its acquisition by MySpace last year.
UPDATE: MySpace issued this statement this evening:
“MySpace SVP of Technology Hadi Partovi is stepping down to pursue other opportunities. In addition to continuing his work as an advisor and angel investor to various startups, he will be following his passion for education by working directly with technology focused non-profits. Hadi leaves as a valued friend to the company, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Interestingly, the statement doesn't address the departure of Ali Partovi, and I have an email into the company to follow-up on his status. A spokeswoman with MySpace also confirmed that the company will remain committed to the Seattle office, with executives such as vice president of technology Nat Brown still working there.
Editor's note: The original statement provided to TechFlash by MySpace omitted the second paragraph which referred to Ali Partovi. Here's that portion of the statement. "Ali Partovi will be stepping down as SVP of Business Development, but will continue working with MySpace as a strategic advisor working on special projects. He will also be taking time to invest in and advise startups."
