Point Inside said that it has added SmartFix functionality to its new indoor mapping service for the iPhone and iPad. The service helps mobile device users determine if their location is accurate on indoor maps. If not, the user can input his or her location on the map by choosing a nearby landmark. “We’ve provided the ability to determine the context of where you are relative to where you want to go, making it easier to orient yourself and determine the best way to get to your destination," said CEO Kevin Foreman in a release.
WatchGuard Technologies today named Sin-Yaw Wang -- a former vice president at Juniper Networks and Sun Microsystems -- as vice president of engineering.
Fate Therapeutics, a San Diego company working on stem cell technologies, has acquired Verio Therapeutics of Ottawa, Ontario. Fate is backed with $42 million from OVP Venture Partners, Arch Venture Partners, Polaris Venture Partners and others.
Frazier Healthcare Ventures of Seattle has co-led a $56 million financing round for Achaogen, a San Francisco company working on technologies to combat bacterial infections. Other investors in the deal included Alta Partners, 5 AM Ventures, ARCH Venture Partners, Domain Associates, Venrock Associates and Versant Ventures.
Google has begun incorporating a Web site's speed in the company's search ranking algorithms. "Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we've seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there," the company said.
Dempsey
Bay Partners appears to have hit hard times, with Matt Marshall at VentureBeat reporting that three of the Silicon Valley firm's partners resigned last month. Bay Partners is well known in Seattle since its founding partner, Neal Dempsey, is a big donor to the University of Washington. Bay also is a backer of Seattle area companies such as Yapta and Daptiv.
