Report: Amazon to unveil new, thinner Kindle in August |

Details are emerging of Amazon.com's next Kindle. Bloomberg reports today that Amazon will introduce the next version of its electronic reader in August, and this one will be thinner and more responsive, but it won't have touch screen capability or color.
Will it be enough to generate buzz in the era of the color, touch, multi-function iPad?
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, at the company's annual shareholder meeting this week, said color for e-paper displays — the kind used in Kindles — is "still some ways out." He declined to discuss or even confirm Amazon's reported acquisition of Touchco, a touch screen technology startup, earlier this year.
According to Bloomberg, the new, thinner Kindles will have "sharper contrast" and a shorter delay time between page turns.
E Ink, the firm that makes e-paper displays for the current lineup of Kindles, showed off some its new technology at a Seattle exhibition this week, including higher contrast displays and some colorization (but a prototype e-reader with really bright colors is still in the lab and at least two years away).
There have been hints Amazon is aiming to put games on the new Kindle, but it's not clear how compelling they would be with a black-and-white display and no touch controls.
I'm wondering also if Amazon will drop the price of its earlier model Kindles (currently $259 and $489) when the new one comes out.
Meantime, there's been a report of a black Kindle sighting in Seattle — perhaps a sign that Amazon is branching out from the exclusively white Kindles.
