Nearly half of all jobs in Washington state are tied to the technology industry, according to a new study released today by the Technology Alliance at the group's annual luncheon. The study, conducted by William B. Beyers of the University of Washington, found that 1.2 million jobs, or 42 percent of Washington's employment, are connected to technology-based companies. Direct employment in the state across technology sectors such as aerospace, software and life sciences stands at 381,546 people, or 13 percent of the workforce.
"Ours is a good news story, and it is clear that these high-impact, high-growth industries are the ones that will lead our state out of the current downturn," said Technology Alliance Chair Jeremy Jaech, adding that the software industry in particular has shown "explosive growth" over the years. Since 1988, employment in software in the state has grown 756 percent.
And those jobs are not just in the hotbed of King County, with 14 counties boasting more than 1,000 technology jobs.
The report also noted that the average salary in the industry is $110,145, which compares to $57,654 for the entire state.
But Jaech said more needs to be done to support the tech industry.
"I want us to stop treating the tech sector like Mount Rainier, you know once in a while when the sun is out, you point to it and say: 'Look isn't that great.' But most days you take it for granted because it is there. We need to better appreciate what an essential jobs engine the tech sector is for our state."
In addition to the economic report, the Technology Alliance's Alliance of Angels network also named its startup company of the year. That honor went to Seattle-based Modumetal.
After Jaech's remarks, Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen delivered the keynote address. More on that in our earlier story.
