Mikesell
Paul Mikesell, who co-founded Isilon Systems with Sujal Patel in 2001, is officially announcing a new company today called Clustrix which is trying to bring some of the same concepts that Isilon pioneered with digital storage to complex databases. And Mikesell, a University of Washington computer science grad and a former RealNetworks employee, has lined up some financial support from the same folks who backed Isilon.
Sequoia Capital is among the investors in the San Francisco company, which is coming out of stealth mode with a new device called the Clustrix CLX 4010 which is designed to help Internet companies and cloud computing service providers operate highly scalable databases. Also, several of the top execs also trace their roots to Isilon, including CTO Aaron Passey and director of operations and quality assurance Scott Sullivan.
“We were an early Isilon investor and watched Paul Mikesell and the team build massively scalable clustered file system technology, taking the company to more than a billion dollars in value,” said Sequoia's Greg McAdoo, who remains on the board at Isilon. ”Based on such a positive experience, we could not pass up the opportunity to back Paul’s new company and take on an equal - if not even more impressive - opportunity with Clustrix.”
GigaOm has more details on the Y Combinator-backed startup, writing that the tools could become more useful as companies try to track data of users and the relationships that tie them together. Other investors in the company include U.S. Venture Partners and ATA Ventures, with total funding of $18 million.
