Coming out of what has to be one of the longer test periods on record for an online startup, InsideTrip today unveiled -- for the second time -- an Internet search service that allows users to sort flights by trip quality. The debut of InsideTrip -- led by former Alaska Airlines and Farecast exec Dave Pelter -- comes two years after their initial debut.
At the NWEN First Look Forum earlier this year (which InsideTrip won by the way), Pelter told me that InsideTrip essentially had to go into "bunker" mode over the past year as it weathered the economic recession. But now it is back. And Pelter is moving the concept ahead, looking to raise money for the venture. (Perhaps persistence pays).
InsideTrip works like this: You input a specific flight route -- say Seattle to San Francisco -- and the search service spits out a results with a TripQuality score on a scale of one to 100. The score is based on 12 factors such as number of stops, legroom, travel duration and lost bags ranking of the airline. In addition, InsideTrip offers a bag and drink fee calculator so consumers can get a better idea of the total airfare price. It also tips travelers off to whether a certain itinerary typically is subject to delays.
“There really are some great air itineraries out there with new planes and generous legroom, and flown by airlines that don't believe in using nickel- and-diming fees for bags and drinks. You just need to know how to find them,” Pelter says in a release.
The InsideTrip service is free, with the company announcing today that it has entered into partnerships with American Airlines and Orbitz. Pelter plans to push for other deals with large companies, telling TechFlash that he sees big opportunities to license the technology to other players.
Seattle is getting a reputation as a hotbed for new online travel startups, which isn't a huge surprise givent hat Expedia is based in Bellevue. In addition to InsideTrip, we're tracking the new Madrona-based startup Off & Away and Rich Barton's new offering TravelPost. (In fact, we're hearing that Barton has another stealthy startup cooking in the space, but more on that later.)
