In our second installment of "Startup of the Week," we put our 10 burning questions to Sporcle founder Matt Ramme. The 3-year-old company, with offices in Seattle and San Francisco, creates quizzes and memory games around topics such as history, science, religion and movies.
What’s your elevator pitch in 140 characters or less... Over 90,000 fun and engaging trivia games on every imaginable subject that have been played over 260 million times -- users are addicted!
We came up with the idea... To solve our own problem with remembering interesting facts, like the names of the U.S. Presidents. The idea grew from there to focus not only on helping people remember facts they already know, but also on giving them a fun way of learning new and interesting information.
The word that best describes our culture is... Fun. (Everything we do has to be fun. Whether a game is educational or entertaining, it has to be enjoyable to play.)
Ramme
We are different from the competition because... Of the breadth and accuracy of our games’ content. We focus on making the most enjoyable --and accurate—games; it’s not fun if you're being tested on wrong data. Also, our game topics cover every conceivable interest area, so our games appeal to every person on the planet.
The biggest challenge we face is... Not being able to add new features and products as fast as we’d like. Because we’re boot-strapped, our ability to work on new projects is limited. We have lots of ideas on how to grow the business.
We’ve raised… People's expectations on what trivia can and should be.
If we had $3 million, we’d invest in... Engineers, mostly. We have a vast number of ideas to strengthen the user experience as well as grow the business. Investing in more engineers would help us continue to innovate on new features for our existing users, and features to attract more users.
The oddest thing about our company is... A majority of our employees are graduates of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science.
The one thing missing from our business is... An espresso machine. We already have a puppy.
We won’t fail because... Of our focus on our users. They are the most important factor in deciding what we do next. We're constantly listening to what they want, and trying to give them more interesting and fun ways of experiencing Sporcle. We also take great care in choosing how to re-invest into the business and how to organize our time and resources, drawing on our core team’s experience building consumer products and running successful businesses.
