Datasphere continues to land new clients for its hyperlocal news and advertising platform. The Bellevue startup, which is backed by Ignition Partners, Fisher Communications and others, announced today that Local TV will set up community-oriented news sites based on Datasphere's LocalNet service. TV stations in 11 states are participating in the roll out, including KDVR in Denver, KSTU in Salt Lake City and WDAF in Kansas City.
Datasphere's technology is already being used to power 300 community Web sites for seven media companies across the country. Its best known local customer is Fisher, the operator of KOMO TV and KOMO radio.
Fisher has established hyperlocal blogs through Datasphere that cover more than 50 geographic areas in the Seattle area, including neighborhood sites for Ballard, Bellevue, Capitol Hill and West Seattle. The company recently announced that those sites -- along with the properties in Oregon, California and Idaho -- have attracted more than 1,000 local advertisers.
Datasphere -- originally founded as SecondSpace -- announced a $10.8 million financing round in January. That was followed by a $1.5 million investment from Fisher. The company -- which has 10 open positions on its Web site -- is led by former Amazon.com executive Satbir Khanuja.
In an interview with TechFlash earlier this year, Khanuja said the company's mission is "to basically become oxygen for every local community."
Of course, the news business is going through a tremendous upheaval right now, so there's no shortage of opportunity. And that's one of the reasons why Datasphere is finding success, since its technology allows traditional media to quickly become active participants online.
Loval TV is a holding company that was formed in 2007 with capital from Oak Hill Capital Partners. It is based in Ft. Wright, Kentucky.
