Amazon.com has been trying to interest large institutions, including federal government agencies, in its cloud computing services. Now the online retailer has scored a high-profile customer, the U.S. government's Recovery.gov website that tracks stimulus spending.
Recovery.gov will run on Amazon's EC2 cloud service, according to the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, which oversees the website. The move will result in savings of some $750,000 in the current budget cycle and allow the Board to "focus more intently on its core mission of delivering rich content for Recovery.gov users without worrying about managing the website’s underlying data center and related computer equipment," according to a press release (pdf here).
As I reported recently, Smartronix and Synteractive, the two federal contractors who worked on the architecture behind Recovery.gov, used Amazon Web Services to test the site last summer. The two firms are are teaming again on a bid for work on Treasury Department websites and are proposing to develop and run those sites on Amazon’s cloud.
Amazon, like Microsoft, Google and other tech firms, is trying to get traction with federal agencies amid a big Obama administration push for government cloud computing. Concerns about the security of sensitive data and bureaucratic snarls have slowed that effort, though tech firms continue to be interested in the government's $76 billion information technology budget.
Here's more on Amazon's recent efforts in Washington, DC.
