Yahoo was the big gainer in the U.S. search results for April, released today by the comScore Networks research firm, but the company appears to have benefited from a change in the way it presents search results. Slideshow-style news results, prompting users to click through to see additional pages and photos, were reportedly a major reason for the company's upward swing from 16.9 percent to 17.7 percent.
ComScore said Microsoft Bing also benefited from the practice, although its number was up more modestly, by one-tenth of a percentage point, to 11.8 percent.
"Both Yahoo! Sites and Microsoft Sites have experienced gains due in part to the introduction of new site navigation experiences that tie content and related search results together within several channels," comScore said in its news release. "These features provide search results to users as they navigate through topical content and meet comScore’s established criteria for counting search queries."
Google's share of the search market dropped seven-tenths of a percentage point for the month in the U.S., to 64.4 percent.
