Alcatel-Lucent has gobbled up ProgrammableWeb, a leading repository of open application programming interfaces or APIs. Over the past five years, ProgrammableWeb has compiled more than 2,000 open APIs from companies such as Amazon.com, Google, DocuSign, Twilio, MapQuest and WhitePages. The directory also includes more than 5,000 mashups that utilize the APIs.
Terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed, but in a press release Alcatel-Lucent said the acquisition offers a compelling new way for the company to connect with the Web developer community.
"Our goal is to protect the uniqueness and independence of ProgrammableWeb as an API repository and developer resource, while adding beneficial technologies and service provider relationships to the mix for everyone's benefit," said Laura Merling, vice president of Alcatel-Lucent's global developer strategy.

In a blog post, ProgrammableWeb's John Musser writes that the acquisition will pump added resources into the community.
"This milestone is a great opportunity for ProgrammableWeb and our community to work with a global organization who gets what open APIs are about, who value the independence of ProgrammableWeb, and who want to grow the open API ecosystem both in the world of telecommunications and beyond," said Musser. "In the end this step will bring PW to a whole new level in terms of fulfilling our mission to be the go-to place for open API developers."
He continued:
"In addition to remaining the independent home to APIs, this partnership gives us the resources to scale by delivering more timely and focused coverage, expanding our directory, and adding new services for developers. By joining with Alcatel-Lucent we are part of an organization with a compelling vision to be a bridge between developers, enterprises, and service providers, which neatly fits our long-term strategy."
