Apple announced today that iBooks — its electronic reader application and e-bookstore — is getting a bunch of new features, including the ability to make notes, create bookmarks and read PDF documents. The app, which debuted on the iPad, is also coming to the iPhone and iPod touch. People will be able to sync what they're reading, along with notes and bookmarks, across the multiple devices.
It's a sign that Apple is extending the reach of its electronic book strategy and stepping up competition with Amazon's Kindle.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs talked about the iBooks updates at the Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, where he introduced the new iPhone 4.
Jobs said Apple has done more than five million book downloads in the first 65 days since iBooks launched and said big publishers have told him Apple accounts for some 22 percent of the e-book market, according to reports from the event. The meaning of those numbers — given that they presumably include free books and don't account for all publishers — may be debatable, but will likely get Amazon's attention. (Amazon hasn't disclosed Kindle book sales or download data).
Amazon is also pursuing a multi-device strategy for Kindle, releasing free Kindle apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, as well as PCs, Macs, BlackBerrys and soon Google Android phones. Amazon already lets Kindle users sync their books across all these devices.
