AT&T: No iPhone-iPad tethering |

We have some bad news for the clever geeks who were hoping to take advantage of the newly announced iPhone tethering capability in the U.S. to provide an Internet connection for their iPad, avoiding paying for an iPad-specific data plan. Looks like that won't be happening.
Responding to a question posed on TechFlash by Steve Rubel, an AT&T spokeswoman told us via email today that it won't be possible to tether the iPhone to the iPad to share Internet access with the Apple slate, citing the fact that the iPad doesn't have any USB ports to enable a wired connection between the devices.
Wait a second, what about Bluetooth? Apple own support page makes it clear that the iPhone allows wireless Bluetooth tethering. But in another TechFlash comment, Mac expert and Seattle journalist Glenn Fleishman notes that he "discovered in testing that the iPad includes the Bluetooth profile required for tethering, but it is not enabled."
This appears to confirm the terse message that an Apple customer reported receiving from Steve Jobs on the subject.
I've asked the AT&T representative for further information about the Bluetooth issue, and I'll update this post depending on the response.

Update: Asked for further info, AT&T referred additional questions to Apple, describing this as an iPad/iPhone issue and not a matter of AT&T policy.
Follow-up: Has all this stuff left you thinking about switching from an iPhone to a new Sprint EVO? Here's our guide to that 4G device.
