Facebook's new office in downtown Seattle is called a "walker's paradise."
There's been some anxious speculation in the tech and real estate communities over the past few weeks about where Facebook plans to locate its new Seattle engineering office. Well, the speculation has come to an end. The social networking powerhouse said today that it has signed a lease at 101 Stewart Street.
That's right in the heart of the city, just a few blocks from the famed fish throwers at Pike Place Market and the Nordstrom flagship store. In fact, Walk Score gives that location its highest ranking, calling it a "Walker's Paradise."
The company plans to have the new office -- which eventually could house up to 40 engineers -- open by late July. The company plans to have five to 10 people in the office, said spokeswoman Kathleen Loughlin.
"We chose the location for a variety of reasons, including the fun neighborhood in the heart of the city, easy access to public transportation, panoramic views of Puget Sound, nice open layout that should enable good communication between people in the office and a fun, social environment," said Loughlin. "Also, the office is one block away from the historic Pike Place Market, giving Facebook Seattle engineers unparalleled diversity in terms of lunchtime dining options. In addition, it is not too far from the UW."
Last month, Facebook announced plans to open a new engineering office in Seattle, the company's first in the U.S. outside its headquarters of Palo Alto, California. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and members of the technology community have been applauding Facebook's decision to locate here.
And while the office is small to start, it is worth remembering that Google too once started in the area with a small footprint. It now employs more than 400 people in the area, split between two offices in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood and Kirkland.
The Pike Place Market area of Seattle is not really known for a high concentration of technology companies, though Redfin moved earlier this year to offices at First and Lenora just two blocks away from Facebook's new digs. Prior to its sale to Google, online photo editing service Picnik also was located in the neighborhood.
