What's the most popular smarthphone app? How you answer that question might differ if you're an iPhone or an Android junkie. Nielsen today released the results of a survey of the most popular mobile applications, with Facebook taking the crown on the iPhone and Google Maps winning the honor on Android phones. (Facebook also was the top app on the BlackBerry, which is an interesting result given that those devices have historically been used in the corporate environment).
And what about Windows Mobile? It didn't even get its own graphical breakout by Nielsen.
Overall, games are the most popular applications on smarthphones, followed by music, social networking and news/weather apps.
Speaking of the weather -- which has been pretty lousy around Seattle for the past week -- The Weather Channel's application consistently ranked high across platforms. It was in the top five most used apps on the BlackBerry, Android and the iPhone.
Full report here, which notes that 21 percent of wireless subscribers now own a smarthphone. Those users on average have 22 apps on their phones. (Just checked my phone and I have 41 apps, which is slightly above the average of 37 for iPhone users).
