If the idea behind Google's temporary switch away from its iconic white background was to boost awareness of its optional background images, it looks like that goal was accomplished. In the process, however, Google also did a lot to raise the self-esteem of Microsoft Bing, which features a background image all the time.
Google's promotion is now over, apparently sooner than expected. But it sure was fun while it lasted.
Whether the cause was adverse reactions from users or the teasing from Microsoft's European division, the search giant has officially gone back to its standard white, about a half-day after launching the experiment. People started noticing the change earlier this hour, and Google's Marissa Mayer confirmed it in a tweet.
Google users who liked the idea can still personalize their Google home pages with background images by selecting from a preset gallery or uploading their own images. The menu is accessible from a link in the lower left of the page.
