With more than seven million Facebook friends and nearly one million Twitter followers, Starbucks is the biggest consumer brand utilizing social media, according to a study conducted by Famecount.com.
It beat out other consumer brands such as Coca-Cola, Whole Foods, Skittles and Oreo, which ranked in the top five.
“It is interesting to see established offline brands perform so strongly. This highlights the growing importance of social media in wider marketing campaigns, as well as the applicability of these channels to established brands, which may not have had a significant online presence previously," said Daniel Dearlove, founder of Famecount.
Starbucks is actually pushing into new arenas too, experimenting with location services such as Brightkite and Foursquare.
The coffee giant has always been an advocate of the concept of the "third place" -- a third location where people spend time outside of the home and workplace. Maybe it will have to invent a concept for the "fourth place" in order to incorporate the social networks where its customers also appear to be hanging out.
