Target started carrying Amazon Kindles in select stores earlier this year. Now the department store chain is going further, with plans for a nationwide rollout of the Amazon e-reader starting June 6.
Amazon started out selling Kindles solely through its website, but apparently sees the value in partnering with a big brick-and-mortar chain. Competing devices such as Apple's iPad and Barnes & Noble's Nook have their own physical sales channels — an important element for people who want to touch and feel a gadget before making a purchase.
Minneapolis-based Target has 1,740 stores in 49 states. It looks like Target is carrying the $259 Kindle 2 and not the larger $489 Kindle DX.
Amazon and Target have an interesting history. Amazon has run the backend of Target's website for the last decade, but Target said last year it plans to end the Amazon deal in 2011 to run its own e-commerce operation.
