If you're an Internet upstart trying to attract new customers, there are two ways you can go about it. There's the Cheezburger Network method and then there's the Bing approach. Both were on display today at the TechCafe startup meetup in downtown Seattle where Cheezburger's Ben Huh and Bing's Aya Zook engaged in a hilarious give-and-take on the strategies they have used to grow their popular services.
Huh offered a passionate description of how Cheezburger grew by earning the trust of users, noting that the ultimate focus has always been on making viewers happy.
Zook, in a classic deadpan, countered: "You want to hear Bing's version of how we got noticed?" he said. "$100 million." That's in reference to Bing's massive marketing campaign, ranging from mentions on The Colbert Report to traditional TV ads.
But that's not all Bing did right, according to Zook. He started his talk by describing the huge challenge that Bing faced in taking on a dominant leader like Google, comparing the challenge to many of the startups in the room.
"People just loved Google and at the time their (satisfaction) levels were like 98.8 (percent), which is like comparable to milk," he said. "So, we knew that our work was cut out for ourselves."
In order to compete, Zook said that Bing had to innovate and act like a startup.
"We knew had to be very nimble in how we approached the development, and that's hard to do at Microsoft because it is all about processes and everything is like 18 months out. So, we had to kind of sidestep that process," he said.
Zook said Bing focused on four areas of search -- shopping, local, travel and health. And so far, 13 months into the Bing experiment, Zook said things are chugging along. He pointed out that Bing has already seen a 4.7 percentage point increase in market share.
Hopefully, one day, your son or daughter will look up to you and say: 'Daddy, I want to Bing that,'" he said.
Here's more from the TechCafe event, including Cheezburger's top brass Scott Porad and Ben Huh humorously discussing their mobile strategy.
And here's Huh talking about how he built Cheezburger into one of the world's biggest online comedy networks.
