Ookla, operators of the Speedtest.net service, have released a new ISP performance ranking that allows broadband customers to see which companies offer the fastest and best performing service in their regions. In Seattle, that honor goes to Comcast, which according to Speedtest shows download speeds of 20.36 Mbps. Comcast also was the top ranked broadband provider nationwide at 16.23 Mbps, followed by Charter Communication and Optimum Online. Ookla -- led by former Speakeasy founder Mike Apgar -- also is developing a new Value Index which will allow consumers to see a cost breakdown of service by region.
The preliminary data collected shows that the current monthly cost of broadband service in the U.S. is $47.32 per month, with an average cost per Mbps at $5.06. According to the Value Index, broadband customers paid $4.24 per Mbps in California; $8.80 per Mbps in Idaho; and $6.36 per Mbps in Michigan. In Washington state, respondents averaged $3.89 per Mbps.
