See that upward blip at the end of the blue line in the chart above? That's a 0.57 percent increase in Microsoft's worldwide Internet Explorer market share -- the biggest gain the Redmond company has experienced in that metric in at least two years, according to data from the NetApplications research firm.
No, it's not exactly a gigantic gain, but it is a small reversal of a big downward trend, and the Internet Explorer team seized the opportunity to highlight the results in a post this morning.
"These numbers are especially interesting when you consider that IE users in Europe have been offered the Browser Choice Screen," writes Ryan Gavin, a senior director on the IE team, referring to the ballot that helped resolve the company's European antitrust case. "As the Net App share results demonstrate, IE usage share gained .88% just in Europe this month, as customers continue to choose IE8 above the alternatives. Additionally, IE grew .81% in Asia and .12% in the US with IE8 growing 1.22% to over 40% of usage share in the US."
NetApplications says in its report the increase overall may be due at least in part to Microsoft's "Browse with Confidence" marketing campaign.
As long as we're delving into tenths of percentage points, it's worth noting that Google's Chrome browser was up 0.20 percent month-over-month, to 7.24 percent worldwide market share; while Firefox was down a half-percent, to 23.81 percent. Apple's Safari was up .08 percent on the same basis.
The statistics above are for all versions of each browser. Microsoft's current Internet Explorer 8 had already been posting market share gains on a standalone basis, compared to individual versions of rival browsers.
Internet Explorer's overall slide dates back to a long period of stagnation in which Microsoft didn't release any major updates to its browser for several years, opening the door for Firefox to gain traction. Microsoft is currently working on its next version, Internet Explorer 9, with a recent leak pointing to a possible August beta.
