McAndrews
We've been curious where former aQuantive CEO Brian McAndrews would be spending his time (and money) since converting to a new role as a venture capitalist at Madrona Venture Group. McAndrews -- who sold aQuantive to Microsoft for $6 billion -- has placed just one bet (that we are aware of) since arriving at the Seattle venture firm last summer. But in an interview with Searchandise -- the Boston area company that McAndrews and Madrona backed in April -- he chats about some of the opportunities he's seeing.
Not surprisingly, McAndrews mentions a number of companies in the online advertising arena. And the types of companies he cites -- including Gowalla, BlueKai, Groupon, Occipital and WildTangent -- sheds some light on where McAndrews thinks things are headed.
The former online ad exec also had some interesting things to say about e-commerce and local advertising.
"Traditional avenues of advertising for local businesses - newspapers, radio, and, to a degree, local television - are struggling, and while there are many new approaches to local advertising, no one has fully cracked the code yet," McAndrews says in part one of the interview.
In terms of local advertising, McAndrews added: "The big breakthrough will be when someone can effectively leverage technology to reach out to local businesses broadly without needing a big sales force and feet on the street."
McAndrews also discusses his views on display advertising and how it is starting to look more like the search advertising business. Part two of the interview can be found here and part three is here.
