Technology analyst Rob Enderle writes in a piece for Digital Trends that Microsoft may be able to exploit weaknesses at Apple right now by bringing to market a successful Windows Tablet device. "This might be just the break Microsoft needs," Enderle writes. "A killer Windows Tablet that outperformed the iPad in some critical areas could make a splash right now, while another dud could have the opposite effect, confirming that the executive team has likely overstayed their welcome."

Energ2 of Seattle plans to host a dedication ceremony on August 10 at the future site of its Advanced Energy Storage Manufacturing Plant in Albany, Oregon. The company, backed by OVP Venture Partners, WRF Capital, Yaletown Venture Partners and others, said the plant will be the first to produce engineered synthetic high-performance carbon used in energy storage for electric vehicles. Funds for the plant were provided by a $21.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Cardiac Science, a maker of automated external defibrillators, announced today that it will replace all AEDs used by first responders and medical providers as part of a revised recall plan coordinated in conjunction with the FDA. The Bothell company estimates that 24,000 AEDs will be replaced in the U.S., costing between $10 million to $15 million. That's in addition to an initial $18.5 million charge, according to a blog post by CEO Doug Marver.

Seattle startup Z2Live said it has announced a new casual games community at jujuPlay, which includes five games that incorporate the company's multiplayer technologies. In the community, players have the ability text and chat with other players as well connect to Facebook friends. Players also can earn juju Coins and earn badges and awards.
Dr. Peter Lee, a former computer scientist at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Carneige Mellon University, has been named the managing director of Microsoft Research Redmond. Lee will report to Microsoft senior vice president Rick Rashid when he joins the company this fall.
