Ever wanted to track down a funny line from a TV show, movie or comedy act? If so, then you'd feel right at home with Entertonement founders David Aronchick and Fouad ElNaggar who started their Seattle company three years ago after reciting lines from the 1980s classic thriller "War Games." The 15-person Internet startup now has thousands of audio clips spread among dozens of channels, including those devoted to comedian Will Ferrell, the hit movie "The Hangover" and even Nintendo's "Super Mario" franchise. Entertonement is attracting about 10 million visitors each month as it looks to become the one stop destination for sound bites. We caught up with Aronchick, a former Microsoft manager, for the latest installment of Startup of the Week.
What’s your elevator pitch — in 140 characters or less... Entertonement is the YouTube for sound bites. Our goal is to let people express themselves through the universal language of pop culture -- also known as sound bites.
We came up with the idea... When my co-founder and I were sitting around drinking beers and started talking like robots, which took us from Johnny5 to W.O.P.R. from "War Games." After doing really bad versions of "Shall we play a game" we went online to try and listen to the real version, struggled to find it, and decided that ensuring the world's access to high quality robot voices would become our life's mission.
The word that best describes our company culture is... Epic. Or Passionate. Epicassionate. We love our users, we love the content they upload and share and our number one goal is to get out of the way of their enjoyment. Although we touch 10 million unique visitors a month now, we still have enough Epicassion to go around - although our Red Bull line item in our budget has increased dramatically in the last 12 months.
We are different from the competition because... First, we are focused. Our goal is to provide a platform for sound bites and short quotes that are meaningful to our users - whether that is user created content or professionally produced content from our partners. We’re not looking to win other media types or chase every new trend; as long as people can use our site to play and share sound bites with their friends we’re happy. Based on the fact that our users play over ten sound bites a second and share over four thousand times a day, we feel like we’re definitely on the right track. Second, we have bent over backwards in working with content partners to ensure users get what they want: high quality content in a safe and non-sketchy environment. We know how hard it is to create content that has meaning for people, and respect the rights of the people who created it whether it be the many independent musicians we’ve worked with like Shawn Smith or giant studios like Lions Gate (distributor thousands of properties, including of one of my favorite Schwarzenegger movies – The Running Man). Third, unlike our competitors, we are MacLeods, of the Clan MacLeod, and believe there can be only one.
The biggest challenge we face is... Helping users realize that they all have microphones and that sound is everywhere: on screens and on streets, in planes and on trains. We accept media from any type of file from any device (cell phones, microphones, video files) and it never fails to amaze me how popular and creative users are when you give them the tools to upload, share and embed. We loved it, for example, when Dane Cook used the site with his fans, and we want to encourage the creativity of our users even more.
David Aronchick
We’ve raised... $4.5M from Redpoint Ventures.
If we had $3 million, we’d invest in... A design team, one of those instant espresso machines, much to the dismay of the coffee shop downstairs which we keep in business, a bottle of champagne for when we hit one billion plays a month, and a life sized golden statue of Alf.
The oddest thing about our company is... In order help our content partners get their sound bites onto our site, we actually pay people to watch movies and TV shows that they love. In fact, we're looking for someone right now to be our Hogan's Heroes expert: "I know nothing, NOTHING!"
The one thing missing from our business is... A full catalog deal with MGM that will let us finally create our official “War Games” page, once and for all.
We won’t fail because... We love audio, we really really love audio. And unlike all those other folks out there who have treated audio like a throw away, we are going to show the world that sound bites are the foundation for a fun and big business.
