Jeff Bezos
Fortune magazine has named Steve Jobs the smartest CEO in tech, calling the Apple boss "a visionary, a micromanager, and a showman who creates such anticipation around new products that their releases are veritable holidays." The choice of Jobs -- who has built Apple into a more valuable company than Microsoft -- is not a surprise.
But, interestingly, two of the runner-ups for the smartest CEO title are located in Seattle. And while one is pretty well known -- Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos -- the other might not roll off the tip of your tongue. Any guesses?
Fortune also named Dendreon CEO Mitch Gold to the list, noting that the biotech executive is doing his part to make sure that prostate cancer patients have adequate treatment. (The company's Provenge treatment was approved by the FDA this year and could generate $1 billion in sales). Other runner-ups included Alibaba Group CEO Jack Ma and Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt.
Having two respected CEOs on Fortune's list is certainly a good thing, but there are other tidbits from the magazine's report on the "50 Smartest People in Tech" that are of interest.
While Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was passed over in the top exec category, one of his employees made the cut in the designer category. Indrani Medhi, an associate researcher in the technology for emerging market group at Microsoft India, was named one of the top designers. And Danah Boyd -- a social media researcher at Microsoft Research -- was named the smartest academic.
Meanwhile, former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myrvold was named a runner-up in the hybrid category, a fitting honor for the founder of Intellectual Ventures given his many interests.
Sadly, Seattle companies had no representatives in the smartest engineer, founder, scientist or investor categories.
