Who will prevail? Here are your 2010 TechFlash tourney brackets |
The best places in the region for technology nerds -- including hidden gems and well-known spots not to be missed. Download the map or add your own location.
Intense rivalries and heated competition will be on full display next Wednesday as more than 115 ping-pong and foosball fanatics converge on the Showbox SoDo for the second annual TechFlash summer bash. Last night, the TechFlash team invited readers to a Capitol Hill bar to see us draw the brackets for the second annual Ping-Pong tournament and inaugural Foosball fiesta.
We've got a huge lineup this year: 71 players in the intermediate division; 16 in the expert division and 32 in the foosball field. Download the brackets from this post, and let the trash talking begin. To cheer on your friends and co-workers, or just enjoy the party, tickets to the Summer bash -- once again featuring Smokin Pete's tasty BBQ -- will be available through Friday at noon. Click here to register.
Who will prevail among these of masters of Pong and Foos? Well, that's too hard to say. But we've got our eyes on a few early matches.
In the expert division (PDF), Akvelon's Valeri Kim will be back again in an effort to defend last year's crown. And Kim's first-round match against Deepak Tak of InterraIT could be interesting. The other seeded players in this group include Greg Gottesman of Madrona Venture Group, Dmitry Balin of Pikaba.com and Minh Le of Silicon Valley Bank all of whom have tough early matches.
In the wild and crazy intermediate bracket (PDF), anything can happen. But there are some intriguing first rounders that at the very least should be entertaining.
We're looking forward to Findwell's Kevin Lisota against Kismet Communications' Rob Nachbar as both are expected to be vying for the coveted "Spirit Award." (Remember, that's the TechFlash prize given to the player who best shows off his or her corporate pride). On the other side of the bracket, it could be fun to watch Jesse Proudman of Blue Box Group battle with Kara Swisher of All Things D.
Foosball is new for us this year, but the social media gurus of Team Banyan Branch are expected to field a strong team. They face Team Microsoft/One to One Interactive in the first round. We're also intrigued to see how Team Conenza performs against Team BuzzLabs on the other side of the bracket (PDF).
Whatever happens, it should be a blast. We're looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday, July 28th at the Showbox SoDo.
Here's a FAQ -- explaining rules, prizes, directions and more-- for all of those coming out to the big event. (Remember, the tournament will start promptly at 4 p.m.)
A big thanks to our sponsors for their ongoing support of TechFlash: Barokas PR, BDO, Bing, Blue Box Group, Filter, KeyBank, R2integrated and The Washington Technology Industry Association.
We'd also like to thank our "Friends of TechFlash" for supporting this event: AdHost Data Centers, Corum Software Mergers & Acquisitions, Debra Seifert Communications, Denali Advanced Integration, DigitalScirocco, Evergreen Venture Capital Association, Extended Results, Is That Odd, JobMonkey, Marchex, MicrosoftChannel 9, OTB Solutions, Parker Smith & Feek, and Parker Technical Solutions.
Marchex COO Pete Christothoulou is leading the effort to transform the strategy and culture at the company. In this role he clearly sees the people he’s surrounding himself with as a key competitive advantage. Here’s a small sample from a recent Q&A with Pete:
What kind of person succeeds at Marchex?
• You are world-class or have the potential to be
• You will do the work yourself vs. constantly delegating/waiting
• You are a team player
• You have a sense of urgency
• You have a competitive spirit
• You are respectful

Is My Business Out of Control?
You’ve probably heard about internal control, but you may not fully appreciate its importance until something goes wrong: information isn’t getting to you to allow you to run your business, money is missing, or things just feel out of control. What’s important when it comes to internal control and what isn’t? BDO can help you look at your processes and procedures and see where you might be exposed to control breakdowns. Contact Sharon Philpott, sphilpott@bdo.com, or Michael Reeves, mreeves@bdo.com, to learn more.
