Since being acquired by Amazon.com in a $1 billion-plus deal last fall, quirky online shoe retailer Zappos has made a point of saying it will remain independent. But Amazon appears to be asserting more control over Zappos. At Zappos' all-hands employee meeting in Las Vegas last week, it was announced that an Amazon executive, Chris Nielsen, will take over from departing Zappos Chief Financial Officer Alfred Lin. Nielsen was previously a vice president of Amazon's Home & Garden store.
Alfred Lin, who also holds the title of chief operating officer, said earlier this year that he will leave Zappos in January 2011 to take a position at venture capital firm Sequoia Capital. Another key Zappos team member, web strategy director Brian Kalma, left for Gilt Groupe, the discount luxury goods website.
Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, who remains at the helm, has lately been traversing the country on a publicity tour for his book "Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose."
Here's some video of Zappos' all-staff in Vegas. Nielsen is introduced by Lin about 38:30 in.
