The Amazon.com marketing machine is cranking up again. The online retailer put out a press release this morning, trumpeting that the next-generation Kindles are the "fastest selling ever." But don't go looking for any numbers to back that up. As is customary (see here, here and here), Amazon doesn't share any sales data when touting Kindle's success.
Amazon put out the Kindle press release a day after a high-profile deal making it the exclusive seller of digital versions of some classic works largely unraveled.
The deal — between Amazon and literary agent Andrew Wylie's new imprint, Odyssey Editions — was announced last month and sent shocks through the publishing industry. It showed that Amazon was willing to go beyond traditional publishers — many of whom claim the digital rights to older backlist titles — and do direct deals with other players.
Random House, which originally published 13 of the 20 books in question, took a hard line on the Amazon deal and boycotted Wylie. Now, after a standoff, Wylie has backed down, making Random House the U.S. digital publisher of those 13 classic works, by authors such as John Updike and Ralph Ellison. Those titles will no longer be e-book exclusives for Amazon.
One thing Amazon isn't shy about sharing is its Kindle book inventory. In the new release, the company says there are now 670,000 titles in the U.S. Kindle store.
It sure would be nice, however, to compare Kindle hardware sales to that of its rivals. (Apple in June said it sold its three-millionth iPad.) But based on past comments by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, I wouldn't count on it any time soon.
