Seattle startup Pelago has introduced its "Society Rewards" program in Las Vegas for Whrrl, the location-based check-in service which competes against Foursquare and Gowalla. As part of the new offering, Whrrl customers in Vegas can earn rewards at hotels, clubs and restaurants for checking in at certain locations and offering positive recommendations. Among the rewards being offered are complimentary Red Bull and vodka cocktails at the Mirage Hotel's bars and a complimentary appetizer with the purchase of an entree at the Luxor.
"Las Vegas is the epicenter for promotional innovation. Clubs, restaurants and bars from around the world follow what happens here," said John Kim, VP of Product Marketing at Pelago. "By rewarding guests for their positive word-of-mouth and visits, these properties will not only create the social fabric of the city, they will also set a new precedent for how to reward loyalty."
Pelago introduced its "Society Rewards" program at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas in March.
Meanwhile, Om Malik at GigaOm reports today on how Pelago is looking at compete against industry leader Foursquare. Interestingly, Pelago CEO Jeff Holden says that the company has accumulated about 350,000 users for its iPhone application, and is adding about 2,000 to 3,000 new users per day. That's about the same as Gowalla, but still behind the estimated two million Foursquare users.
Founded in 2006, Pelago is backed with more than $20 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Bezos Expeditions, T-Venture, Trilogy Equity Partners and Reliance Technology Ventures.
