Team TechFlash was checking out the Seattle Geek Week calendar today, trying to figure which events to attend during our city's inaugural nerd fest, when we realized we should make this more of a collaborative thing. So we're offering up some of our personal favorites, the ones that look most promising to us. Share yours in the comments, or if you're running one of the events, use the space to make your pitch to potential attendees.
But first, you may be asking, what the heck is Seattle Geek Week? If so, that means you missed our conversation with Chris Pirillo earlier this week, and you really should go back and check it out, he had lots of good stuff to say. At any rate, Geek Week is an ad-hoc, 10-day collection of events that grew up around Pirillo's Gnomedex conference through a combination of planning and serendipity.
Things got started today with the Seattle Geek Week Golf Tournament in Bellevue, billed as the first golf tournament to be integrated with social media -- complete with foursquare check-ins, blog posts with hints for each hole, and geocached prizes hidden along the course. Yeah, we're sorry we missed that one, too.
But there's plenty of Geek Week left, with concerts, meetups and conferences continuing through next week. After going through the calendar, these are some of the Geek Week events on our radar.
Conferences: pii2010 -- privacy, identity, innovation conference -- taking place Aug. 17-19 (TechFlash is a media sponsor of this event); and Gnomedex, taking place Aug. 19-21. Both of these are at the Bell Harbor Conference Center, and they've joined forces to offer a special rate people who want to attend both.
Startup Pitches: Innovate!2010 Pitch Slam, Tuesday Aug. 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and TechCafe Presents, Thursday Aug. 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Hacking: The Gnomedex Open Government Hackathon, where attendees will use government data and APIs to build apps, lasting 24 hours from Saturday Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. to Sunday Aug. 22 at 5 p.m.
Media/Entertainment: Whrrl BBQ & Outdoor Screening of "Life in Perpetual Beta," Wednesday, Aug. 18 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Nerd rock band Kirby Krackle, Wednesday Aug. 18 from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the High Dive in Fremont; and Seattle TechKaraoke, Friday Aug. 20 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Bellydancing: Seriously, what would a Geek Week be without a bellydancing tweetup? This is the final event of the week, appropriately enough, scheduled for Sunday Aug. 22 at 7 p.m.
We would have mentioned BarCamp Seattle 2010, this weekend, and the SMC Seattle August Event, slated for Tuesday night, but both are already overcapacity, so that would have been a tease. A waiting list is available for each if you want to give either of them a shot.
Here's the rest of the calendar if you want to check out the full agenda. Also see the official Geek Week site. Surely we've overlooked some good ones, so please feel free to help us out in the comments below.
