Mark Hurd, the newly former Hewlett-Packard CEO, was widely recognized for turning around the company after taking over five years ago, but anonymous employee reviews collected by the site Glassdoor.com suggest that many people inside the company were dissatisfied with his leadership of the company even before the events that led him to resign earlier today.
Hurd has an approval rating of 34 percent among more than 1,000 HP employees who contributed reviews to the site. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, by comparison, has a 54 percent approval rating among Microsoft employees, and Steve Jobs has a 98 percent approval rating among Apple employees.
“You need to replace the CEO with someone who have a vision for growth for our company not someone who only cuts costs," wrote an anonymous Hewlett-Packard software engineer in one of many negative reviews on the site.
Well, one part of that employee's wish was granted, with Hurd resigning today after getting caught up in a sexual harassment controversy involving an HP contractor and the reported discovery of inaccurate expense reports that Hurd filed, related to her. Now the only question is whom will be picked to replace Hurd on a permanent basis. HP's board of directors has formed a committee to oversee the search.
Overall, HP has a company rating of 2.4 from its employees on Glassdoor, which qualifies as "dissatisfied." (Microsoft's is 3.5 by comparison, which translates into "satisfied.") HP's category of work/life balance gets the highest rating (3.5), while senior leadership and employee morale come in at 2.4 on the site.
Glassdoor, co-founded by Seattle-area tech entrepreneur Rich Barton, is based in Sausalito, Calif.
