Parallels Inc., known for its Parallels Desktop virtualization software for running Windows on Macs, today named a Microsoft executive, Birger Steen, as its new president. Steen, previously Microsoft's vice president of small and medium business and distribution, is set to join Parallels next month. The company has its U.S. headquarters in Renton, south of Seattle.
Seattle-based online learning company Giant Campus this week introduced five new online high-school classes focused on technology and business innovation, including one on green design and technology, which Giant Campus describes as the first course of its kind.
Jimmy Schementi, program manager for IronRuby at Microsoft wrote today that he has left the company amid what he views as a "serious lack of commitment" to the project. Iron Ruby is an open-source implementation of the Ruby programming language on Microsoft's .NET development platform.
Treemo Labs is reveling in the early success of CNet's new iPhone app, which was developed by the Seattle company. Released earlier this week (iTunes link), as of this afternoon it's No. 1 in the iTunes ranking of top free news apps, and No. 22 on the list of top free apps overall.
Microsoft today donated nine pallets of Xbox 360 consoles, games, accessories, and Windows games worth an estimated $20,000 to the USO Puget Sound, to distribute to military personnel in town for the Seafair festivities. Speaking of boats, we can't resist a good story about Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's yachts, and the London Daily Mail has a doozy, reporting that Paris Hilton is borrowing Allen's mega-yacht Tatoosh for the month. "Definitely the biggest and best yacht everywhere we go," the site quotes her as posting online. "Love it! Huge!" With Allen reportedly trying to sell the Tatoosh, that type of celebrity endorsement couldn't hurt.
Speaking at the inaugural Techonomy conference in South Lake Tahoe today, the other Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, talked about the need for better software for modeling and addressing disease, and expressed disappointment over the tone of the health-care debate in the United States.
