Microsoft's Xbox 360 topped both the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii in U.S. unit sales in July, riding the momentum of its revamped hardware to take the crown for the second straight month, according to data to be released today by the NPD Group market research firm.
The Xbox 360 registered 443,000 units sold for the month -- more than double its total of 203,000 in the same month last year. By comparison last month, the totals were 254,000 for the Wii and 215,000 for the PlayStation 3, based on early numbers released to NPD clients.
Gamers appear to be embracing the revamped hardware and, in some cases, switching to the Xbox 360 in advance of the release of Microsoft's Kinect motion-based control system later this year, said David Dennis, a Microsoft spokesman. He called it a "pretty awesome month" for Xbox 360 sales.
The company released a redesigned Xbox 360 in mid-June, with a slimmer profile and quieter mechanisms, among other improvements. With a 250 GB hard drive and built-in wifi adapter, it sells for just under $300, the same price as the previous Xbox 360, which came with a 120 GB hard drive and Ethernet adapter, requiring the purchase of a separate wifi adapter for as much as $100 to make the console wireless.
Update: Turns out the Xbox 360 topped not only the Wii and the PS3 in unit sales but also the Nintendo DS handheld gaming device (at 398,000 units), according to the NPD numbers. It's the first time that the Microsoft has outsold all other hardware since September 2007, when Halo 3 was launched, says NPD analyst Anita Frazier in an email accompanying the data.
Follow-up: More details from the NPD report, including another month atop the accessories chart for Microsoft's Xbox Live 1600-point card.
