The hot new color for data centers appears to be green. In the last three weeks, we've written about two new environmentally-friendly data centers in the Pacific Northwest that have touted energy conservation as one of their primary goals. Now, a third is in the works in the Spokane area. TierPoint 3 Data Center announced this week that it has secured $8.2 million in financing from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Evergreen Business Capital and the Small Business Administration.
The data center, which is expected to open next Spring, is touting a number of cutting-edge technologies in order to reduce energy consumption. Among those is a geothermal cooling system.
“TierPoint determined that a traditional chiller cooling system would use approximately six million gallons of water each year. Four point five million gallons of that water would be lost to evaporation, and another one point five million gallons would be returned to the water treatment system polluted with biocides,” said TierPoint's Greg Zemp. “TierPoint’s geothermal cooling system is non‐consumptive, which means zero gallons will be evaporated or in need of treatment. It is anticipated that the energy saved would power seventy residential houses per year.”
The firm also notes that it is using an inertia storage system for its back-up power supply, one that utilizes centrifugal energy generated from a high-mass spinning flywheel. By avoiding batteries, the company said that they reduce the risk of lead or acid leaking into the environment.
TierPoint is led by Bernard Daines, a well known high-tech entrepreneur in Spokane who previously founded Packet Engines, World Wide Packets and Grand Junction. Other executives include Dan Seliger and Octavio Morales -- both of whom previously worked for Packet Engines and World Wide Packets.
