Microsoft's latest annual Form 10-K filing with the SEC, made public last week, shows that jobs in product support and consulting services were the hardest hit in the multiple rounds of layoffs made by the company last year. The company's total direct worldwide employment in that category (which Microsoft rounds to the nearest thousand in its filings) dropped to 15,000 people as of June 30, from 17,000 the year before.
The numbers confirm widespread reports at the time. Microsoft previously hasn't gone into this level of detail in public about the types of jobs that were cut as part of the more than 5,000 layoffs last year.
By comparison, the total number of jobs at the company in research and development fell by 1,000 people, to 35,000 employees as of June 30 this year. Sales and marketing jobs fell by the same amount, to 25,000. Employment held steady in the manufacturing/distribution and general/administrative categories, at 5,000 and 9,000 positions, respectively.
Prior to the recession, employment had been skyrocketing in some job categories, with R&D positions soaring from 31,000 in fiscal 2007 to 35,000 in fiscal 2008, according to past filings by the company.
The numbers don't include the contractors and vendors, commonly known as "orange badges," who work on jobs for Microsoft through employment agencies.
