Plastic Logic kills Que reader
Plastic Logic was part of a wave of companies developing electronic readers to rival Amazon's Kindle. But after numerous production delays, the Silicon Valley-based company is canceling its Que reader.
As recently as this January, Plastic Logic was showing off Que at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, calling it an "iconic product" and a "paperless briefcase" for business professionals. But the changing dynamics of the e-reader market — with the launch of Apple's iPad and the price war between Kindle, Barnes and Noble's Nook and Sony Readers — apparently caused Plastic Logic to rethink its plans.
From the Plastic Logic press release:
"We recognize the market has dramatically changed, and with the product delays we have experienced, it no longer make sense for us to move forward with our first generation electronic reading product," said Plastic Logic CEO Richard Archuleta. "This was a hard decision, but is the best one for our company, our investors and our customers."
Archuleta added that the company plans to "redesign and retool for our next generation ProReader product," though he gave no timeline.
Separately, the Financial Times reports that a Russian state-owned company is in talks to take an investment stake in Plastic Logic.
