MediaMall Technologies confirmed this morning that it is releasing an HTML5-based web app for its PlayOn Internet video service that will bring Netflix, Hulu and other video sites to the iPhone.
Officially launching tomorrow, the web app is already available on the iPhone at http://m.playon.tv for PlayOn subscribers running the latest version of the company's software for Windows PCs. The PlayOn technology works by streaming Internet video from a PC over a home network to TVs, and now to iPhones.
MediaMall has U.S. offices in Seattle and New York. The new web app will also work on iPads, although the company says it's still working on resolution improvements for the larger screen on that device.
The story was first reported this morning by VentureBeat, which says it has been testing the new web app. The service will be available to new PlayOn customers under a subscription plan that runs $39.99 for the first year and $19.99 for every year after that. MediaMall says existing customers who bought the PlayOn Basic software under its earlier flat $39.99 price will need to upgrade to use the iPhone app.
PlayOn's streaming software doesn't work on Macs, so despite the release of a new web app oriented to Apple's phone, people wanting to use the service will need to be running Windows PCs at home.
The strategy is a backup plan, albeit a potentially effective one. The company, which has U.S. offices in Seattle and New York, said in a July 15 blog post that it hoped to release a native app for the iPhone, through the Apple App store, but after giving initial approval, Apple put the PlayOn app back under review.
By going instead with a web app based on HTML5 video, the company doesn't need Apple approval. A MediaMall representative says it still hopes to receive approval and go forward with the native app.
The PlayOn technology works over a home network, letting people watch TV shows and movies from Hulu, YouTube, Netflix and other Internet services on their television sets, by streaming the content from their Windows PCs to devices including the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles.
A company representative says the iPhone web app will also be able to access the PlayOn home software remotely, over a 3G network, using the Wide Area Network (WAN) IP address available in the software.
