This week, in conjunction with our 97.3 KIRO-FM show (and TechFlash podcast), we're launching a fun new segment: TechFlash Trivia. Each week, in the final segment of the show, we'll pose a tech trivia question and invite you to submit your answer here on the site. If you answer correctly, we'll put your name in a pool, and we'll pick a couple people, at random, to receive a limited-edition TechFlash shirt.
Our first question was chosen in honor of our special guest on the show, legendary Donkey Kong player Steve Wiebe: When Nintendo first brought Donkey Kong to the U.S., it came up with the name Mario for the main character in a very specific way. So here's the question ...
After whom was Mario named?
Click here to submit your answer via email, and check back next weekend for the answer.
The TechFlash episode featuring Steve Wiebe is available here, or via our podcast feed. The show airs on KIRO this week at a special time, 10 p.m. Sunday night.
Answer: Mario was named after Mario Segale, the Seattle-area real estate developer who was Nintendo of America's landlord at the time. See this excerpt from Art Thiel's book "Out of Left Field" for the story.
We received dozens of correct answers on this one, so congratulations if you got it right. The winners of the TechFlash shirts are Arnie Forsman and James Hayden, whose names were drawn at random from the pool of correct submissions.
