President Barack Obama arrived in Seattle today to raise funds for Democratic candidates and talk with small business owners about how to create jobs and boost the economy. Obama's visit -- including a stop at Grand Central Bakery and a private fundraiser later today at the home of RealNetworks founder Rob Glaser -- appears to be well timed given the latest economic report from the state of Washington..
The Employment Security Department today announced that the unemployment rate fell for the fourth consecutive month, dropping slightly to 8.9 percent in July. That's below the national unemployment rate of 9.5 percent, a challenging political issue for President Obama who has been struggling to find creative ways to boost jobs since taking office.
Washington state may be one of the bright spots in the U.S. economy, but it is certainly not out of the woods yet. During the month of July, overall payrolls declined by 2,300 as an estimated 5,400 government jobs were cut.
“Job growth is still wobbly, but the private sector is showing encouraging signs of life,” Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee said in a release today. The report indicated that 21,100 private sector jobs have been added in the state so far this year.
The information category -- where a number of high-tech jobs are classified -- saw an increase of 300 jobs during the month when compared to the previous month. There are now an estimated 103,100 people working in the information sector in the state.
