If Microsoft's secret weapon in the mobile phone business is its Xbox franchise, the company tonight did its best to put on a display of firepower. In an announcement from Gamescon 2010 in Germany, Microsoft released a long list of titles -- including one from the Halo franchise and others from Seattle's PopCap -- that will be among the "first wave" of games available for Windows Phone 7.
Engadget has a preview of some of the games, based on some hands-on time with prototype units. In short, the site says, the games look promising.
"To make Windows Phone 7 really work, the folks in Redmond will have to hit the right note on not just gaming, but the basic user experience, hardware, applications, and carrier partnerships," it writes. "Based on what we've seen of Xbox Live on these devices, we think the company can check at least one of those boxes off."
