The Nielsen Co. research firm today released data asserting that Microsoft Bing has become the No. 2 search engine in U.S. market share -- even before combining its traffic with Yahoo under their newly launched partnership.
As explained by Joe Wilcox on BetaNews, this is not a cause for celebration inside Microsoft, because its gains are coming primarily at the expense of its partner. Google still dominates the market, with 65 percent share of search volume in August. Microsoft now stands at 13.9 percent, and Yahoo at 13.1 percent -- down from 14.6 percent in July -- according to the Nielsen data released today.
Microsoft's Bing market share has risen sharply from a year ago, when it stood at 10.7 percent in the Nielsen data.
The Nielsen numbers vary from those released in the past by other research firms, including comScore Networks, but the trends generally hold true across the different data sets.
