A scene from Epic Mickey (Disney Interactive)
Video-game revivals were a central theme on the first day of the Penny Arcade Expo 2010 in downtown Seattle, but the two best examples of the trend were at completely opposite ends of the spectrum.
In one section of the convention center, Walt Disney artists penned custom drawings of Mickey and other characters for fans, in honor of the upcoming "Epic Mickey" game for the Nintendo Wii. It was a big hit among PAX attendees, based on the long line and the buzz on the PAX forums. Epic Mickey (and Deus Ex) creator Warren Spector also won praise for his PAX 2010 keynote Friday morning.
Meanwhile, over at the Take-Two Games booth, Gearbox Software was showing off the epic raunchiness of "Duke Nukem Forever," a long-awaited sequel to "Duke Nukem 3D," released in 1996. Read Wired's vivid rundown here, if you have the stomach for profanity and naked, three-breasted aliens.
Meanwhile, at a hotel conference room across the street, I got a chance to see and play some newly unveiled levels of the upcoming "Heroes on the Move" for Sony's PlayStation Move controller. The game brings together characters from the iconic PlayStation franchises Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper.
Here's a video I took offering a glimpse of one of the levels featuring Sly, with commentary from user interface artist D. Reed of Nihilistic Software, which is making the game (communicating with the original franchise developers to ensure that the characters live up to the original vision).
Bellevue-based Sucker Punch Productions, the developer of the Sly Cooper series, was also represented at the Sony event with a preview of its upcoming inFAMOUS 2 game. Go here for a new video clip that was released by Sony in conjunction with PAX, although be forewarned that there's some heavy violence in this one.
Back over at the convention center, before leaving for the day, I got a tour of a couple of the games in the works for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. Here's a video with Michael Klucher of Microsoft's XNA Game Studio walking me through "Project Sunburst" and "CarneyVale Showtime."
I'm headed back down to PAX today for more.
