Working title for Paul Allen's upcoming memoir: 'Idea Man'

We've known for a while that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was writing a memoir, based on a report last year by Crain's New York Business that Penguin Group's business publishing unit had acquired the rights. The book, due out next year, promises to generate even more attention now that Allen is taking on Google, Apple, Facebook and other tech giants in a high-profile patent lawsuit.
But even more interesting, in light of the controversy surrounding the suit, is what we've learned is the working title for the book: "Idea Man."
Allen's representatives aren't commenting on the book, and we're hearing that the name isn't final, but "Idea Man: A Memoir" is apparently being given serious enough consideration to show up in early listings for the book on Amazon.com and other sites, confirming the rumors about the title that we've picked up elsewhere.
As noted in this Biography channel piece, Allen was commonly known as the "idea man" inside Microsoft, the big thinker, working opposite Bill Gates, the "man of action." The characteristic was evident in Allen at Microsoft's legendary moment of genesis, when he showed Gates the issue of Popular Electronics featuring the Altair 8800 that inspired the company's seminal software project.
With that as context, the title could cement Allen's reputation as someone whose ideas were critical to the personal computer revolution. In the same way, the lawsuit goes to great lengths to explain the role of Allen's Interval Research lab in coming up with some of the formative technologies of the web.
But given the events of the past week, the name would also have negative connotations for people upset over Allen's litigation, who see the suit as sour grapes from someone who wasn't able to successfully bring the ideas to market, and is now suing those who did.
At any rate, we're looking forward to reading this tome, whatever it ends up being called. Amazon's listing says it's due out in April.
