A year after launching an e-commerce website called Haggle, InfoSpace has closed it down.
The Bellevue-based internet search company determined that Haggle was "unlikely to reach a profitable threshold," and sold the assets to a competitor called BigDeal.com, said InfoSpace spokeswoman Stacy Ybarra. She declined to specify the size of the deal.
With Haggle, people pre-purchased "bids" which they used to compete in online auctions.
Here's more from my story last November explaining the service.
Haggle accepted its last bid on Oct. 27 and now re-directs members to the BigDeal.com site.
"Despite our efforts to sustain the operation, it was determined that Haggle was unlikely to reach a profitable threshold that we needed to justify further investments," Ybarra said. "Given that’s we’re a publicly traded company, we had to look out for shareholder interests."
"When we launched the business, there was a different competitive environment than there is today. There are a number of new (bidding) sites that have launched," she said.
Haggle was part of a push by InfoSpace under new CEO Will Lansing to develop new products. Lansing, a former NBC internet executive with an e-commerce background, joined InfoSpace last year.
