Comcast has experienced its fair share of outages in the Seattle area recently, including a cable TV disruption earlier this month and an Internet outage last month. But the Comcast service disruption which occurred in West Seattle yesterday may be the strangest of them all.
Service went down for about 2,500 Comcast customers after a bullet hole was discovered to have severed a fiber line. Technicians for the company were able to quickly resolve the problem. In a Tweet, Comcast representatives admitted that an outage tied to a bullet hole is "pretty unusual." [Post updated with comment from Comcast]
In a follow-up, the company said they may never know why it occurred.
I've reached out to Comcast to get a more detailed explanation on what happened and whether they've turned the matter over to the Seattle Police Department. I'll update the post as I hear more.
Here's what Comcast spokesman Steve Kipp had to say on the matter:
"...We probably will never know why a bullet was fired into the line. My guess is it wasn’t intentional. We have not filed a police report and we are not investigating further. Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time this has happened. About 13 years ago, someone shot a bullet into a main fiber line in Tacoma on New Year’s Eve, knocking out service to about half the city. We normally do not release the locations of fiber cuts, because we don’t want to encourage repeat incidents."
