It has been a big transition year for RealNetworks, with longtime CEO Rob Glaser stepping down and the Seattle company spinning off its Rhapsody music unit. That prompted my colleague Todd Bishop to ask a few months ago just what the pioneer in streaming media will do next. Well, we got a hint today, as newly-appointed CEO Bob Kimball showed off a new cloud-based media service called Unifi at the Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco.
So, what is Unifi? The company isn't sharing too many details, but a description on the Web site says it provides a way to "manage all of your photos, music and videos in one place."
"It works across multiple devices, so you can enjoy your memories wherever you are, whenever you want, and even share them with family and friends on Facebook," the Web site says.
Digital media storage and sharing is a hot area, and the new Unifi offering sounds a bit like what Seattle startup HomePipe Networks is doing.
All Things Digital, which is hosting the Dive Into Mobile conference, covered the Kimball talk in a live thread which is expected to be formally announced in the first quarter of next year.
