Amazon.com is looking to expand its home delivery service, with The Financial Times reporting (subscription required) that the online retailer has begun recruiting staffers for a national push. Amazon has operated its Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service in Seattle since 2007, with the lime green trucks becoming somewhat common place on city streets.
The retailer announced plans to expand in the U.K. last summer, and it rolled out a new service in parts of Seattle called AmazonTote that allowed shoppers to receive select merchandise (beyond groceries) once or twice a week.
Going national will not be an easy or inexpensive task, placing the company more in competition with the likes of UPS and FedEx. It also conjures images of WebVan, the ambitious grocery delivery service which crashed during the dot-com bust.
Here's the report on the new service from NPR.
